Growing Organs
“So tall so smart I can grow
Delicious creamy grow grow grow
We love grow”
Sounds familiar? It’s the milk powder jingle from Grow! Apparently, milk isn’t the only thing that makes us grow. I just found out that stem cells can grow organs too! Smart eh?
Let’s rewind to the beginning of the breakthrough. Did you know, that in 2006, British Scientists grew the world’s first artificial liver from stem cells? Described as a “Eureka moment” by the Newcastle University researchers, this “mini liver” (the size of a one pence piece) was created from babies’ umbilical cord blood a few moments after birth. To be used to test new drugs, this great lab-grown liver tissue discovery would also mean reducing the number of experiments on animals.
