Without a transplant of donated cord blood, two and a half year old Georgia Conn wouldn’t live to see her third birthday.
An accident at birth caused Georgia to develop Cerebral Palsy, which saw her suffering up to 50 seizures a day, for her first two and a half years after birth. But after getting stem cell treatment using her own cord blood, she has become more vocal, regained muscle strength and can sit for more than an hour without being in pain.
Cord blood is the preferred source of stem cells for transplantation worldwide and Georgia is the first person to have gone through such treatment here in Singapore. So far, more than 14,000 patients suffering from over 80 diseases have been treated successfully with cord blood stem cells.
Mr Michael Conn, Georgia’s father, commented “We are very grateful to Dr Keith Goh and CordLife for making this safe treatment possible in Singapore. Without them, we would have had to travel to the United States, which was fraught with potential problems for such a simple procedure.
